Thomas C Butler, EA Tom has 29 years of finance, accounting and hands-on business experience in a broad range of industries from retail to high-tech. As a business owner and manager, he is a grizzled veteran of the everyday issues facing small business, including cash management, financial reporting, budgeting, strategic planning, regulatory compliance, human resources, governance, taxation, and operations. Tom received his Bachelors Degree in Commerce from the University of Virginia and a Masters Degree in Financial Management from the University of Maryland University College, where he was elected to the Phi Kappa Phi national honor society. He is an Enrolled Agent, the only tax professionals licensed directly by the Internal Revenue Service. Tom is a member of the National Association of Enrolled Agents, the Virginia Society of Enrolled Agents, and is a Fellow of the National Tax Practice Institute. He is a Certified Tax Resolution Specialist and member of the American Society of Tax Problem Solvers. Tom is also the Dave Ramsey Endorsed Local Provider for taxation in Loudoun and western Fairfax Counties, an exclusive designation that is only awarded to those in the top of their field.
Tom co-founded Acumen Accounting in 2008 after working seven years to build another award-winning accounting firm in northern Virginia. He is a vocal advocate for organ donation, having received a life-saving liver transplant in December, 2008. Tom is a firm believer in the power of a strong faith to overcome any of life's hurdles, and he spends his free time spreading good cheer and encouraging people to stay positive and committed to life, family, and friends.
Jacqualine L Surber Jacqui, together with Tom, co-founded Acumen Accounting and brings over 22 years of solid small business accounting experience to the table. Also a business owner and manager, she too has a wide range of experience in a variety of industries including accounting, an abundance of building trades, real estate, automotive, retail and banking. Her background includes extensive experience with accounting and cash management, budget and strategic management, internal controls, tax return preparation, regulatory compliance, project management, human resources, client and vendor relations and sound business practices. Her wide-ranging skills enable her to present information and reports to clients that are coherent, timely, and precise. Her attention to detail is superlative, enabling her to see things that other accountants would normally miss. We are happy to share that Jacqui is also currently working to obtain her Enrolled Agent credentials with the Internal Revenue Service.
